Thurs., Sept. 4, 5:30-8PM, in downtown Iowa City
Tickets $25/person, 6 and under free; available at New Pioneer Co-op
Enjoy hors d’oeuvres made from local ingredients at the hip downtown Iowa City  restaurants that support local food producers. Proceeds support Johnson County Local Food Alliance. Participating restaurants include: Atlas, Devotay, Motley Cow Cafe, New Pioneer Food Co-op, One Twenty Six, and The Red Avocado.

Field to Family Garden Learning Tour
What is Permaculture? See it in action! with Mary Crooks and Fred Meyer
Sun., Sept. 7, 2008, 1-4 PM FREE
Meet at New Pioneer Co-op, Washington and Van Buren Streets, Iowa City.
See permaculture patterns and principles in action at the yards of Fred Meyer and Mary Crooks. Mary’s yard is undergoing a complete ecological landscape design makeover and Fred’s yard features an established vegetable and herb garden based on permaculture principles. This event is being held in conjunction with New Pioneer Food Co-op and Field to Family 08. We will meet at the Iowa City New Pioneer Co-op store and carpool to the two sites.
 
Benefit Book Reading and Hors d’oeuvres: Chef Kurt Michael Friese reads aloud from A Cook’s Journey: Slow Food in the Heartland, published by Ice Cube Press.

Boost your digestive health and general immunity by cultivating friendly microorganisms in your food! Moving beyond common cultured items like yogurt and beer, innovative fermenter Martha Franzen will explain and demonstrate techniques for culturing vegetables, specifically; Cultured Carrots and Ginger, and Pickled Daikon and Green Beans. Learn about and sample the famous cultured tea-based drink Kombucha. Pete Flynn is seeking to make the perfect mead, and is willing to experiment with many different possible source materials. Pete will share how to make vinegar, too!
